Why mileage data deserves more care than it gets
A mileage log is not just kilometers and tax math. It is a timestamped record of every place you park, produced automatically, all day, for years. Held in a company's cloud, tied to your account, that record is subject to breaches, subpoenas, acquisitions, and business-model changes you have no say in. The safest place for a map of your life is hardware you own.
Most popular mileage trackers are cloud services with an app attached: your drives are processed and stored on their servers, and the account is the product's spine. That architecture is convenient for them, and it is the norm, which is exactly why searching for a private alternative is hard.
What Klomio does differently
- On-device by architecture. Drive detection, distance calculation, and your entire trip history live encrypted on your iPhone. There is no server-side copy because there is no server side.
- No account. Nothing to sign up for, so there is nothing to link your drives to. The app works from the first minute, anonymously.
- Automatic, even with the app closed. Privacy does not cost you the convenience: Klomio notices when you start driving and logs the trip in the background, with no extra hardware plugged into your car.
- No analytics. No tracking SDKs watching how you use a location app. The irony of the category was not lost on us.
- A tamper-evident log. Every trip is digitally sealed on the device. When the tax office asks how they can trust a self-kept log, your export answers it: the record shows it has not been altered since capture.
The honest fine print. One thing does leave your phone: when a trip is saved, its start and end coordinates go to a map service to be turned into readable addresses. No route, no history, no identity attached. That is the entire outbound footprint, and it is in the privacy policy in plain language.

What you give up, honestly
Architecture is a trade, and you should know both sides. Without a cloud there is no automatic multi-device sync; your log lives on your iPhone and moves via an encrypted backup file you control. If you want a web dashboard synced across three devices, a cloud tracker fits you better. If you want the strongest possible custody of your location history with the same automatic logging, that is the trade Klomio makes on purpose.
